Book(s) for February-April: Twilight Series

We launched our book club in February with Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series.
Although we were all skeptical, I think it's safe to say that we all found ourselves entranced by these books. Mom, Larissa and Jana all finished the series quickly. Karen and Dave are a little behind, but they both had fun with the first book.
If any of you haven't seen the movie yet, I HIGHLY reccomend that you watch this lovely oscar-worthy gem ;)
So...any thoughts/feelings/comments about Twilight?

  1. Hey! Nice idea making this blog thing! I want to have Edward's freaky half-vampire babby!

  2. I think it will be good for everybody to leave Twilight behind us and move on to bigger and better things.

  3. Yep - watched it. I'm shocked it wasn't a major Oscar contender! At least Edward got to hand out one of the Oscar awards... Of course, as usual, the book was better than the movie. I have to say I'm impressed with the ethnic diversity in Forks. There are many mentions of Edward's extreme paleness, but no mention was made (that I recall) of the ethnicity of any of the other characters except Bella. Washington state is not notorious for great diversity, and rural peninsula towns much less so, but maybe vampires, already being a diverse minority group, attract such diversity to them. Hmmmm..... definitely a thought in search of a mind willing to ponder it.

I'm excited to learn that Larissa is going to have a baby! We will love it, of course, even if it is Edward's freaky half-vampire baby. But is Brian okay with that? Should I be buying pink or blue?

Seriously, this read was much more fun than it should have been. Steph has figured out how to write in a way that captures your attention and makes you want to find out what happens next, yet there isn't anything about the book that makes it stand anywhere near great literature. I thought about the book a lot for the first few days after finishing the series, but now except for the occasional teasing comment they are usually far from my thoughts.

  4. I wouldn't recommend buying clothes for the baby since it is going to grow up too rapidly to wear them for long.

It was interesting the way they stuck so much ethnicity into the movie. I am pretty sure the only time any ethnicity was mentioned was with the native americans. that's all I can think of.

  5. Yeah. I mean, not that there's anything wrong with diversity, but it did seem unrealistic that each of Bella's friends would pretty much be a different ethnicity.
